Law of the Garbage Truck

‘One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so.... Love the people who treat you right. Forgive the ones who don't. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Have a garbage-free day!’

Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching?

Was held at Rotary Sadan this Sunday, the 23rd August at 10 A.M. followed by Lunch.
It was attended by representatives from WHO and UNICEF. DG Rtn Utpal Majumdar addressed the gathering and PDG Rtn Sidhartha Sadhan Bose conducted the entire programme in a very interesting way. President Rtn Kuldip and Club Service Director, Rtn Chittaranjan Ghosh attended this workshop.

The Polio Plus programme provides funding for mass immunization campaigns as well as support for social mobilization, surveillance and laboratories to help carry out the final stages of global polio eradication. Rotarians have raised funds that will amount to more than 1.2 billion U$ in support by the time Polio is eradicated and has provided hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours. Rotary is a spearheading partner with the WHO, UNICEF and US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in the initiative to eradicate Polio worldwide. As a result of the efforts, two billion children under age five have received the Polio vaccine; five million people who might otherwise be paralyzed are walking today. 5, 00,000 new cases of Polio are prevented each year and the number of Polio cases has declined by 99% worldwide. Rotary’s leadership in the Polio eradication effort was recognized in 2009 with U$ 255 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007. The first grant was spent during the 2008 calendar year on immunization and other Polio eradication activities, and the second grant must be spent in the same way in 2009. Rotary must raise U$ 100 million to match each grant for a total of U$ 200 million by 30th June, 2012. This fund raising effort is called Rotary’s U$ 200 million Challenge. Every Rotary Club in the world is being asked to help meet the challenge by organizing a public fund raising event annually for the next three years. The U$ 555 million generated by the grant and match will be vital catalyst to help achieve Rotary’s top goal of eradicating Polio from the face of this universe.

An Appeal for Your Contribution

Dear Fellow Rotarians,
Rotary Club of Calcutta South City

We had assured our beloved DG, Rtn Utpal Majumdar, for our joining hands with the District for Needy children's Heart Surgery Project planned by our District this Rotary year.

For this, we had forwarded the name of a 7 month old very needy child Mt. Subarna Naskar, alongwith his medical reports and all concerned papers to the District few days back.

We are glad that our District Officials, acted very promptly realising the emergency of the case and the child is now being admitted to B.M. Birla Heart Centre for necessary Heart Surgery to be performed on 1st September, 2009.

What a nice begning of the holy month of Durga Puja and Ramzaan for each one of us. We feel very lucky and thankful to the Almighty God for this opportunity when we will be able to serve a very needy child who otherwise could not have imagined to undergo such costly surgery/treatment beyond his family's means.

We have to contribute our share of Rs 20,000 for this case to the District, for which we want to appeal every one of you to contribute generously so that we can at least undertake the cases for FIVE such needy children if not more.

We, on behalf of each one of you feel assured that yes, we can do this...and we will do it, for poor needy children,

With warm regards,

Yours in Rotary,

Rtn Kuldip Singfh Virdi, President 2009-10
Rtn Sanjay Kumar Kanodia, Secretary 2009-10
Rtn Sanjit Chatterjee, Treasurer 2009-10
